What does Family Exchange do?
Family Exchange is a Utah-based company that is dedicated to providing a cultural exchange experience for international students and host families. Students from all around the world come to Utah to become familiar with the American way of life by experiencing authentic family life. Utah host families get to learn about foreign cultures and make lasting friendships with the students hosted in their homes.
Programs We Offer
High School Exchange Student
We work directly with Nacel Open Door to provide a ten-month program for international high school students. Students are carefully screened for language, grades, and overall suitability for the program. We place each student in local public, charter or private high schools. The students then live with a volunteer host family while they attend high school. The students will arrive in Utah 1-2 weeks prior to the start of the school year and will leave within 1-2 weeks after school ends in June.
Summer Exchange Student
We work with international family-based youth organizations. Kids age 12-18 work all year to improve their English-language ability as well as to learn about other cultures. Come summer, they get to put their skills to the test when they fly to Utah to join a volunteer host family as a family member — not as a tourist or guest. In this way, both sides can truly learn to understand one another. These children want to experience daily life in the United States by helping out with chores and trying new experiences, so host families are not expected to plan special trips or activities. The length of stay is generally 23 days in July/August.
Summer Camp for Utah Students
Family Exchange hosts a 4-day/3-night camp for the international students, prior to staying with their host family. Utah students are welcome and encouraged to attend the camp. The camp is held at Weber State University in July and is filled with cultural-sharing activities, sports, food and FUN!
Teen Ambassador Program
Our Teen Ambassadors are the first American contact to our international summer students. They become citizen diplomats by creating positive impressions about America and Americans, breaking stereotypes, and fostering mutual understanding and respect. Teen Ambassadors between the ages of 14 and 18 are held to a high standard of conduct and are expected to attend the summer camp, host a summer exchange student and participate in year-long fundraising events. One of the many benefits of the Teen Ambassador Program is the opportunity teaches them to become effective future leaders.
